Houseplants for low light

Tolerate low light — corners, hallways, north-facing rooms.

“Low light” is the trickiest claim in plant content. Almost no houseplant grows enthusiastically in dim conditions — they tolerate it. The plants on this page can survive and stay healthy in light too low to read by, but most of them will grow faster, fuller, and with better leaf colour in brighter spots.

Use this list when the space dictates the plant — a windowless bathroom, a hallway corner, an office without a window. If you have a choice, brighter is almost always better, even for plants on this list.

Pet-safety is shown on each card. “Pet-safe” means ASPCA-confirmed for cats and dogs; “toxic” verdicts cite their authority (ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline, MSD Vet Manual, or family-chemistry consensus).
