Trailing houseplants

Stems trail down — hanging baskets, high shelves, macramé.

Trailing plants are the most visually flexible category of houseplants. They drape from a shelf, fall from a hanging basket, climb a moss pole, or trail across a sideboard. Many are also among the easiest plants to keep alive.

Most trailing species are also climbers in the wild — given a support, the same pothos that hangs from a basket will scale a moss pole and grow larger, more mature leaves. The form is yours to choose.

Pet safety varies sharply on this list. Several of the most popular trailing plants are toxic to cats and dogs; check each card.
